Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language

The Graduate Certificate in TESOL is a 40 credit point, 6 month full time, entry level postgraduate award course which aims to prepare graduates to fulfil the role of teacher of English as a second language (ESL) or English as a foreign language (EFL) teacher in a variety of educational settings.

The course builds on understandings and skills acquired in pre-service teacher education or through other teaching-learning experiences. It consists of four core units, each of 10 credit points, which focus on developing knowledge about the nature and structure of English, an introduction to first and second language acquisition theory, and its application to classroom practice. The course does not provide a qualification for registration as a teacher.

Other Prerequisites to Undertaking this Course

Students accepting a place in this course are required to participate in professional experience placement(s). In order to participate in professional experience it is the responsibility students to ensure that they are able to successfully complete the child protection screening required in their State/Territory. Students who are not cleared for working with children, and therefore not be able to be placed in a compulsory professional experience placement, will not be able to complete the course.

Requirements for working with children: All students enrolled must have the appropriate approvals before they may enter a classroom. These are: Blue Card (Qld), Working with Children Check (ACT, Vic) and Prohibited Employment Declaration (NSW).

Students who complete this program are eligible to enrol in Postgraduate Certificates in Education or the Master of Education program.
