Within this specialisation you will explore issues concerning teachers in the areas of visual arts, music, dance and drama. Our group of specialist education staff will help you develop your professional skills, knowledge and understanding of curriculum and teaching in the Creative Arts. It also offers you the opportunities to understand how children respond to arts and how you can incorporate this understanding into classroom teaching.
This specialisation is designed for secondary teachers or other individuals who have responsibility for providing career advice. It focuses on the needs that individuals in schools, or other educational settings have in responding to the pressures and opportunities presented by the current and future worlds of work. The Career Development specialisation has been endorsed by the Career Industry Council of Australia (CICA). This specialisation is not available in fully online mode; two units (one per semester) in this specialisation have attendance requirements.
In line with the rapid technological advancements in education, the Contemporary Learning specialisation brings information and communication technology to the fingertips of every educator. You will learn about complex concepts of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and how to incorporate them into practical and relevant tools which aid quality teaching.
The specialisation in Early Childhood is for teachers, allied professionals, educational and policy leaders, researchers, child advocates, and anyone who wants to learn more about early childhood and early years theory and practice. The specialisation is not a pre-service teaching qualification, but provides opportunity for strong professional reflection, understanding of policy and practice in the early years (birth to age 8), and theoretical knowledge. The learning from this specialisation supports advocacy for children, families and practitioners in the early years.
The Gifted Education specialisation is designed for graduate students interested in pursuing advanced studies in gifted education. Each unit in this specialisation aims to prepare educators to nurture and provide for gifted students in varied educational settings. As an educator, you will be exposed to theories, models and definitions concerning giftedness and talent development. You will be trained to expertly identify and understand gifted and talented students; you will learn to program and provision for these audiences; and also evaluate the effectiveness of programs and teaching approaches through research based practices. Students who undertake this specialisation are also provided opportunities to complete study in research methods and to investigate a specific area of gifted and talented education through an in-depth literature review and an action research project.
Integrated STEM - Not offered in 2018
This specialisation enables teachers and educators to develop, practice and apply specialist knowledge and skills in Science, Technologies, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education using an Integrated STEM education approach in primary or secondary schools, aligned with content in the Australian Curriculum and respective state /territory syllabi.
The aim of this specialisation is to develop school leaders in the area of Integrated STEM education curriculum/syllabus implementation, student assessment and integration to support teaching in primary or secondary schools.
Language and Literacy Education
Extend your expertise through the study of language, issues and practices relating to the teaching of English. A metalanguage for teachers and students is central to this specialisation as well as the application of this knowledge to enhance the study of literature and repertoires of English usage. Students will have the opportunity to understand, appreciate and respond to historical, contemporary and multi-modal texts and analyse and create texts during their studies.
Leading the New Evangelisation
The Catholic Church's deepest identity and mission is expressed in the term New Evangelisation. This specialisation focuses on the formation and leadership development of teachers, school and church leaders, youth ministers, chaplains and family/parish educators in realising the aspirations of the New Evangelisation. Students explore the nature and importance of the Catholic Church's teaching on evangelisation, examine current best practice in creating dynamic centres of the New Evangelisation in Catholic schools and ecclesial youth ministries, and experience a faith formation retreat. In addition to the two foundation units, which focus on faith formation and creating centres of the New Evangelisation, a number of specified additional units are available.
The aim of this specialisation is to provide educators with opportunities to further develop their theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in relation to the assessment of primary students' oral language and literacy skills as well as to enhance their skills in providing appropriate evidence-based adjustments and interventions. Given ongoing concerns about the literacy of students in Australian schools, there is a continuing need for teachers and allied professionals to engage with current perspectives on oral language development and literacy research and practice.
This specialisation has a particular focus on the teaching and learning of Mathematics. Students study current theory, research and practices in Mathematics Education. They explore pedagogical approaches to a variety of topic areas in mathematics curricula, issues of equity and access for students, theories of learning, and the characteristics of high quality teaching. In both units there is opportunity for students to undertake small research projects which are relevant to their personal situation.
This specialisation is designed for current and potential mathematics leaders with an opportunity to further develop their own mathematics content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge as well as develop specific leadership skills. Students will critically examine the role of leadership in promoting, developing and providing quality teaching and student learning in mathematics education, and how to evaluate the impact of leadership decisions on student learning.
Middle School Mathematics
The Middle School Mathematics specialisation allows professional educators to extend their scholarship and develop their pedagogical and mathematical content knowledge for the teaching of mathematics in the middle years of schooling (Years 5-9).
Safeguarding Children and Young People
The specialisation is designed to provide the opportunity for participants to develop knowledge and understandings of contemporary issues and responses to safeguarding children and young people, exploring the conditions and factors that facilitate or impede child-safe environments. Central will be framing a response which draws upon the rich moral and social teachings of the Catholic Church and a theological understanding of the child.
The Special Education specialisation is for qualified teachers interested in extending their professional expertise. This offering allows teachers interested in working with students with diverse learning needs to complete four advanced units of study in Special Education. Students will develop specialised knowledge, skills and values in catering for a diverse range of needs. The course links theory, practice and education research to inclusive practices.
This specialisation allows professional educators to extend their scholarship and develop their expertise in an area related to Student Wellbeing. Students focus on the role of the school in relation to social disadvantages, barriers to access and inclusion and the nature of school community partnerships.
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
The TESOL specialisation is designed specifically for educators who wish to teach English to students for whom English is a second or additional language. This specialisation helps students explore theories of second language acquisition and also of different 'language teaching' methods. Students critically examine current research and practice in the area of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) in both national and international contexts and apply these theoretical perspectives to particular classroom contexts.
