ACU provides a wide range of opportunities for students, such as volunteer and professional work placement experiences. My university experience was one of the best things. I came across wonderful people and most of all an atmosphere which always welcomed me with open arms, recognised hard work, and at the same time gave me a quality education.”

Information technology

Information technology (IT) is the application of computers and telecommunications equipment to store, retrieve, transmit and manipulate data often in the context of a business or other enterprise.

Although IT is commonly used to describe computers and computer networks, it also encompasses other information distribution technologies such as television and telephones. Several industries are associated with information technology, including computer hardware, software, electronics, semiconductors, internet, telecom equipment, e-commerce, and computer services.

Career opportunities arise in both the private and public sectors and cover a wide range of occupations, including:

  • Applications developer
  • Systems analyst
  • Systems administrator
  • Software architect
  • Database administrator
  • Information systems manager
  • IT support technician
  • Systems project manager
  • Programmer
  • Software engineer
  • Technical and network support professional
  • Web specialist and developer

ACU offers undergraduate and postgraduate study options in IT. At undergraduate level, the Bachelor of Information Technology provides general grounding in core business topics in the first year of study. The second year concentrates on foundation information technology topics including systems analysis, databases and programming. In the third year students will choose a professional pathway from industry-relevant options such as business analysis, applications development or database administration.

The Master of Information Technology provides students with the communications skills, critical thinking abilities and technical competencies needed to advance their career in information and communications technology.
