Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Pass and Honours)

Qualify with the knowledge needed to diagnose and manage disorders in human movement and the personal skills to provide exceptional care. As a physiotherapist students will be involved in the identification, assessment and treatment of individuals with musculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory, orthopaedic and neurological conditions across the lifespan from paediatrics to gerontology, including gender specific issues.

The Tuition fees quoted above are for commencing students in the current year who undertake a normal full-time load. Fees are reviewed annually.

Tuition fees for continuing students may increase by up to 3 percent each year for the minimum duration of the course as provided on your electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCOE). Students who continue to study beyond the minimum duration will have the relevant annual commencing rate applied to their fees for subsequent study periods.

English (4, SA); plus one of Biology, Chemistry or Physics (4, SA).

Assumed knowledge: English (any); plus one of Biology, Chemistry or Physics.

The equivalent of Australian Year 12 including studies in science, plus an overall academic IELTS score of 7.0 (with no band less than 7.0).

Description

This course will equip students with the skills to practise as a competent physiotherapist in a variety of settings from hospitals and community facilities to private practice. Graduates will be competent in applying the principles of physiotherapy, ethical in their practice and independent, lifelong learners.

Students are provided the opportunity to interact in order to explore and analyse critically the prevention and treatment of human movement disorders.


Career Paths

Graduates may work in a variety of areas including rehabilitation, paediatrics, women’s health, sports physiotherapy, cardiorespiratory, orthopaedics, gerontology and ergonomics, hospitals and rehabilitation units, community health centres and/or private practice.

Graduates can also work as a consultant in educational, government and industrial institutions, and/or conduct research that contributes to the knowledge base of the profession.


Professional Experience

Students will undertake clinical placements in which they will be supervised by a clinical facilitator. During each placement they will develop and integrate knowledge, skills and professional behaviours in accordance with the requirements of the Australian Physiotherapy Council.

Professional Recognition

Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA)
The APA is the peak body for physiotherapists in Australia. The APA advocates for equitable access to physiotherapy and provides support and information for physiotherapists, through educational resources and professional development opportunities. The APA also publishes the Australian Journal of Physiotherapy.

Australian Physiotherapy Council (APC)
The APC is an independent national organisation, responsible for the maintenance and regular review of the Australian Standards for Physiotherapy. The APC accredits physiotherapy programs and Australian universities.

Graduates will be eligible for registration with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia under the auspices of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), and will also be eligible for membership of the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA).


More Course Information

Student registration
All students enrolled in an approved physiotherapy program must be registered with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia. The University will pass students details to the Physiotherapy Board of Australia. No fees are required for student registration. Further information can be obtained from http://www.physiotherapyboard.gov.au/Student-Registrations.aspx.

Immunisation
Students are required to provide evidence of immunisation prior to attending clinical placements at hospitals and other health agencies. Please refer to the Faculty of Health Sciences Recommended Health Procedures in the 2011 Handbook as a guide only. Recommended Health Procedures for 2012 will be advised at a later date.

First Aid and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate
Students are required to be certified in first aid and CPR prior to undertaking clinical practice. Valid certification must be presented to the School of Physiotherapy annually.

Blue Card (QLD only)
In Queensland, all students who work with children and young people as part of their studies will need to apply for a blue card from the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian. Further information can be obtained from http://www.ccypcg.qld.gov.au/index.aspx.

Criminal Record Check (NSW only)
All students who undertake clinical placements in NSW Health facilities must undergo a number of checks prior to commencing clinical placement, including a National Criminal Record Check. Uniforms
Students are required to purchase and wear an ACU student physiotherapist uniform during clinical components of the course. Details regarding uniform purchase will be made available from the School of Physiotherapy after enrolment.

Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)
Students are required to wear personal protection equipment when entering/participating in anatomy wet lab practical sessions. The protective equipment comprises of a lab coat, fully enclosed shoes and Australian standard safety glasses.
