Bachelor of Paramedicine

Qualify as a proactive and adaptable paramedic with sound reasoning and problem-solving skills and skills to cope in a high-pressure environment.

This course will equip students with the skills to analyse situations using appropriate assessment techniques and to examine patients whilst considering their particular needs.

Applicants must also comply with the Admission Rules.

To be eligible for admission to the course, an applicant must have completed the following prerequisites at year 12 level, or equivalent.

Victoria
Prerequisites: Units 3 and 4 – a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English.

Description

This course aims to develop a proactive and adaptable graduate who will be a competent, ethical paramedic; a creative and critical thinker, and an independent lifelong learner. This course will provide you with the skills and qualifications to practice as a paramedic.

Career Paths

Graduates will be eligible for employment as a paramedic with an emergency ambulance service in Australia and in some International Ambulance or Health organisations. With further study qualified paramedics can go on to become intensive-care paramedics (ICPs), team leaders, clinical instructors, ambulance service managers, specialist educators, flight paramedics or special operations team (SOT) rescue paramedics.

Professional Experience

Students will undertake eight clinical practice units (790 hours) within an emergency or simulated emergency environment, throughout the course.


Volunteer Experience

A volunteer community engagement unit is undertaken in this course.

Pathways to Further Study

A variety of postgraduate studies in paramedicine will be available to graduates on completion of this undergraduate degree.

More Course Information

Medical and Physical Capacity Test
Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Paramedicine will be required to undertake a medical and physical capacity test prior to commencing clinical placement with an Australian Ambulance Service. This is an ambulance service mandatory requirement.

Immunisation
Students are required to provide evidence of immunisation prior to attending clinical placements at hospitals and other health agencies. Please refer to the Faculty of Health Sciences Recommended Health Procedures in the 2011 Handbook as a guide only. Recommended Health Procedures for 2012 will be advised at a later date.

Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate
Students must have a current CPR Certificate from an accredited source prior to undertaking clinical practice. A valid CPR certificate must be presented to the School of Nursing and Midwifery annually.

Police Check
It is the responsibility of the student to pay for and obtain a police check upon acceptance into the course. The police check must be presented to the School of Nursing and Midwifery by week 3, semester 1 in the commencing year of the course. Students who have not presented the Police check by this time will be unable to participate in practical units.

Working with Children Check
All students who work with children and young people as part of their studies are required to apply for a Working with Children check. As children/young people may be cared for in all clinical settings, students are required to complete the requirements of the Working with Children check prior to their clinical experience. Further information can be obtained from http://www.justice.vic.gov.au/workingwithchildren.

Uniforms
Students are required to purchase the Ambulance Victoria approved overalls, a hard hat, personal protective equipment, black boots, wet weather jacket, fleece jacket and other equipment as required. Students are also required to wear a wrist watch with a second hand whilst on clinical placement.
Details regarding uniform purchase will be made available from the clinical office of the School of Nursing and Midwifery after enrolment.
