To be eligible for admission to the course, an applicant must have completed the following prerequisites at year 12 level, or equivalent.

Queensland
Prerequisites: English (4, SA).

Victoria
Prerequisites: Units 3 and 4 a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English.

Description

The Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Paramedicine course aims to develop a proactive and adaptable graduate who, at a beginning level, will be a competent, ethical clinician, a creative and critical thinker, an independent lifelong learner and a professional nurse and paramedic. The course uses learner-centred approaches including inquiry and situation-based learning to enhance students experiences during the course as well as their readiness for the workplace. With an increased emphasis on national and state health priorities, graduates will be well prepared to meet current and future health needs of the community in both nursing and paramedicine settings.


Career Paths

Graduates can pursue a range of careers including: registered nurse, maternal and infant carer, medical dispatcher, medical/surgical nurse, paramedic nurse, accident and emergency nurse, aged carer, clinical supervisor, community carer, developmental disability carer and trainer. With further study, qualified paramedics can become intensive-care paramedics (ICPs), team leaders or special operations team (SOT) rescue paramedics.

Professional Experience

You will undertake six units of nursing practice and six units of paramedicine practice in a variety of healthcare environments.


Professional Recognition

Eligible graduates can apply for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Please refer to the Registration Standards for Nursing and Midwifery on the APRHA website: http://www.ahpra.gov.au/

More Course Information

This course will be new to the Canberra campus in 2012, as such further information pertaining to regulatory requirements and paramedic uniforms will be provided in due course.

Medical and Physical Capacity Test
Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Paramedicine will be required to undertake a medical and physical capacity test prior to commencing clinical placement with an Australian Ambulance Service. This is an ambulance service mandatory requirement.

Immunisation
Students are required to provide evidence of immunisation prior to attending clinical placements at hospitals and other health agencies. Please refer to the Faculty of Health Sciences Recommended Health Procedures in the 2011 Handbook as a guide only. Recommended Health Procedures for 2012 will be advised at a later date.

Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate
Students must have a current CPR Certificate from an accredited source prior to undertaking clinical practice. A valid CPR certificate must be presented to the School of Nursing or School of Nursing and Midwifery in the respective state annually.

Police Check
It is the responsibility of the student to pay for and obtain a police check upon acceptance into the course. The police check must be presented to the School of Nursing or School of Nursing and Midwifery in the respective state by week 3, semester 1 in the commencing year of the course. Students who have not presented the Police check by this time will be unable to participate in practical units.

Blue Card (QLD only)
In Queensland, all students who work with children and young people as part of their studies will need to apply for a blue card from the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian. Further information can be obtained from http://www.ccypcg.qld.gov.au/index.aspx.

Working with Children Check (Victoria only)
All students who work with children and young people as part of their studies are required to apply for a Working with Children check. As children/young people may be cared for in all clinical settings, students are required to complete the requirements of the Working with Children check prior to their clinical experience. Further information can be obtained from http://www.justice.vic.gov.au/workingwithchildren.

Uniforms
Students representing ACU on any clinical placement outside of the University must wear an approved uniform. Details regarding uniform purchase will be made available from the clinical office of the School of Nursing or School of Nursing and Midwifery in each state after enrolment.

Nursing uniform
Students are required to purchase and wear an ACU student nurse uniform during clinical components of the course.

Paramedic uniform (QLD)
In addition to the student nurse uniform, students are required to purchase a Queensland Ambulance Service Paramedicine uniform including baseball cap, belt (operational), epaulettes, boots, safety glasses, personal protective equipment and other equipment as required.  See both the ACU Paramedics Uniform Order Form and the Student Paramedic P.P.E & Uniforms Order Form.

Paramedic uniform (Vic)
In addition to the student nurse uniform, students are required to purchase the Ambulance Victoria approved overalls, a hard hat, personal protective equipment, black boots, wet weather jacket, fleece jacket and other equipment as required. Students are also required to wear a wrist watch with a second hand whilst on clinical placement.
