LOTE Language Other Than English Certificate Course
Course: Certificate in LOTE (Language Other Than English) or Advanced Certificate in LOTE.
Course description
The aim of the course is to enable community language teachers to become familiar with and competent in a range of language teaching methodologies and techniques that are currently practised by language teachers successfully throughout the world.
On successful completion of the Certificate in LOTE course, participants may then participate in the Advanced Certificate in LOTE course.
Who should participate in this course?
This course is designed for community language teachers currently teaching LOTE within Community Language Schools.
On completion of this course participants will be able to:
* Use LOTE methods and techniques successfully in their own language classrooms
* Present language learning as a communicative activity in a student centred learning environment.
Course content overview:
* Language Teaching Techniques:
- This is designed to enable teachers to develop expertise in specialised language teaching strategies, task design and materials development. It allows teachers to evaluate their language teaching in the light of current trends in language teaching.
* Language Teaching Theory:
- This is designed to enable students to become aware of a range of language teaching methodologies, theory of language acquisition, learning styles and language pedagogy issues. It will enable students to become familiar with a range of assessment and evaluation procedures to design appropriate teaching programs as well as curriculum development for language learners. It also examines the role of the language teacher in the school and the community.
Class size
Given the highly personal and interactive approach taken in the course, the number of participants is restricted to 25.
Pre-requisites
Participants need to be registered as a community language teacher in a recognised Community Language School.
Certification
A Certificate LOTE Teaching will be issued by Australian Catholic University on successful completion of the course, based on satisfactory attendance and assessment.
Lecturers
The lecturers are highly qualified people who have had many years experience teaching and lecturing in this field.
Methods of instruction
Lectures, videos, workshops and small group work. Practical work and between session activities. Detailed handouts given each session.
Assessment
Course participants will be assessed on the material covered in lectures, a set of communicative activities, student presentations and interactive discussions. Assessment is progressive throughout the course using a mix of assessment methods. These include a reflective journal, group presentations and the development of a unit of work.
