Studying Nursing at ACU National

ACU National is a recognised national leader in nursing education and prides itself on the quality of its nursing programs, staff and graduates.

ACU National's School of Nursing has nursing laboratories that simulate facilities in hospitals, nursing wards, medication/treatment rooms and preparation rooms. Students learn and practice nursing skills on technologically advanced mannequins, including paediatric mannequins.

The Bachelor of Nursing program encourages additional regular practice of nursing skills outside of class hours by providing the use of fully equipped nursing practice rooms.

ACU National incorporates comprehensive clinical placements at various hospitals and health care facilities in Canberra to provide students with a first hand understanding of the profession. Hands-on practical experience is a major component of our Bachelor of Nursing.

The University has strong links with Australia's healthcare sector and our nursing graduates have a 99% employment rate (Source: 2006 Graduate Destination Survey (Graduate Careers Council of Australia).

ACU National's small class size, highly-qualified teaching staff and an emphasis on practical training within a hospital simulated environment mean that graduates are well equipped to deal with real life situations.

About the Bachelor of Nursing

The Bachelor of Nursing course is designed to be studied over three years (full-time) or six years (part-time). Students may be given credit for subjects usually studied in the first two semesters (the first year of a full-time program or equivalent part time program).

The Bachelor of Nursing includes studies related to the art and science of nursing, as well as the professional and personal development of individual students. It aims to develop a graduate who will, at beginning level, be an independent life long learner, a competent practitioner, a creative and critical thinker and a motivated researcher.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Nursing will be eligible for registration as a nurse with the ACT Nursing and Midwifery Board and also throughout Australia (with the mutual recognition of registration between the States and Territories.) They will be able to practice at beginning levels of performance in the four domains of nursing identified by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMC).

Bachelor of Nursing graduates will be able to practice nursing in the following areas: aged care, community, developmental disability, maternal and infant care, medical/surgical, mental health and paediatric nursing.
