Graduate Certificate in Education Law

Are you looking to gain confidence in planning for, and responding to, legal issues?

The Graduate Certificate in Education Law equips educators and administrators with the knowledge and skills needed to deal confidently, effectively and appropriately with legal issues. Students have the opportunity to develop practical skills to identify possible legal problems before they arise, and to respond effectively when they do. Students will also understand better the role of lawyers, when to involve them and how to work most effectively with them.

Graduates of the course will be confident in their ability to develop educational policy within a legal framework. The course will examine the general principles and practices of school governance, in state, church-based or independent schools, as relevant. Students will gain understanding of the various statutory, contractual and common law duties, particularly the duty to take reasonable care, which underpin the educational process. Participants will be challenged to critically examine the obligations and rights of parents, students and colleagues. To promote the development of practical skills, students will be encouraged to bring their own experience to the course, and to share that experience with others.
