Course objectives
To give participants the skills to behave more assertively with all those with whom they interact both inside and outside the workplace.
Target audience
Appropriate for all employees.
Course duration
1 full day or 3 x 1/2 days (ideally spaced one week apart).
Outcomes for course participants
On completion of the training participants will be able to:
* Identify and stand up for their rights as an individual
* Assertively state their needs, wants, views and feelings
* Handle difficult people more effectively
* Behave empathically with others (rather than over-identifying or being neutral)
* Practise assertiveness techniques suitable for specific situations

* What is assertiveness?
* Assertiveness, aggression and submission: contrasting behaviours
* The effects of negative self-talk and irrational beliefs on our ability to be assertive
* Self esteem/self-appraisal questionnaire
* Four self esteem techniques:
- broken record
- negative assertion
- negative enquiry
- "I" statements
* Contrasting behaviours: empathy, neutrality and identification
* Dealing with difficult people
* Putting it all together: skills practice
* Action plan
