Course: Performance Management

Course objectives
To teach participants how to set appropriate goals for their staff, coach and motivate them towards the achievement of those goals, deal appropriately with poor performance and recognise individual achievements.

Target audience
People who manage staff and who carry out performance appraisals on other staff.

Course duration
2 days.

Outcomes for course participants
On completion of the training participants will be able to:
* Demonstrate commitment to making effective performance management a high priority
* Understand the organisation's performance appraisal system and processes (forms etc)
* Carry out performance planning with each of their staff in a timely, effective manner
* Provide constructive feedback in an assertive, emphatic and timely manner
* Assist and encourage their staff to establish and achieve their development plan

* Objectives of the performance management system
* The key players: manager, staff member, countersigner (manager's manager) and their roles
* Performance management cycle: performance planning; coaching/feedback; formal review
* Goals/Key Result Areas and Skills and Attributes
* Coaching/Feedback: regular coaching and constructive feedback; recognition
* Formal review: six monthly performance feedback
* Recognising good performance and dealing with unacceptable performance
* The development plan
* The performance appraisal forms and processes
* Minimising rating errors
* The benefits of 180° (or 360°) feedback
* Performance review skills practice
* Self-appraisal and action plan
