Course: Coaching and Mentoring

Course objectives
To empower participants to provide effective, timely coaching to their team members and other staff and give valuable mentoring support to employees as appropriate.

Target audience
Supervisors and managers involved in the coaching of others and/or acting as a mentor.

Course duration
1 full day or 2 x1/2 days.

Outcomes for course participants
On completion of the training participants will be able to:
* Understand the role and importance of coaching and mentoring
* Recognise the elements of effective coaching and constructive feedback
* Provide effective positive and negative feedback to employees, as appropriate
* Properly deal with unsatisfactory performance and recognise excellent performance
* Commit themselves to the role and responsibilities of effective mentoring (if in a mentor role)

* What is coaching? (Ongoing instruction, support and feedback - by manager or other staff)
* The role, importance and techniques of effective coaching
* Elements of constructive feedback: specific, timely, behaviour-based, impact on work/ others
* Recognising good performance
* Managing unsatisfactory performance
* Who is a mentor? (Respected role model other than manager; who guides and supports us)
* The role, importance and prevalence of mentoring
* Seeking a mentor (Accessibility; respect for their values, behaviour and skills)
* Becoming a mentor (making the commitment, ongoing communication, mutual respect)
* Coaching, mentoring and the performance appraisal system
* Self-appraisal and action plan
