Six tips to prepare you for placement

Want to be a placement pro? We’ve got some tips to help you nail it.

  1. Get to know the organisation

It pays to have some idea about who you're working for. Dedicate a few minutes to googling your placement organisation to find out who they are and what they’re about. Placements aren’t just about getting practical experience, but also making valuable contacts for your future career.

  2. Be presentable

Ok, so a tux isn’t necessary, but make sure you’re wearing the appropriate clothing for what you will be doing on placement. Be presentable and make sure that if you do need to wear a uniform, it’s ready to go.

  3. Be prepared

Instead of following your heart, try following Google Maps. It sounds obvious, but make sure you know where you’re going. Also, make sure you know the name of the person you’re meeting, the time you start, and how you're going to get there. Being prepared will help to reduce any first-day jitters!

  4. Get all your checks and immunisations

Tick this off your list well before placement! Get all your required police checks and immunisations organised before you start. Check with your placement supervisor or give your placement organisation a call if you have any questions.

  5. Be kind (to yourself)

Things don’t always work out like you planned. It might be your first time on placement, and if so, it’s not always easy settling into a new work environment. If it’s not going according to plan, tell somebody. Contact an ACU staff member (clinical/placement coordinator), speak with your placement supervisor or contact the ACU Counselling Service for assistance.

  6. Don’t be late

Don’t let this be the first thing your supervisor says. Punctuality is extremely important, so make sure you plan out your trip and aim to arrive early.
