Gifts are given with discrimination as to their worth or value to the giver and recipient. So what happens when God’s greatest gift is given without regard to worth?

Leading international New Testament and Early Christianity expert Professor John Barclay will explore this notion and its radical effects in the history of Christian thought as part of the Institute for Religion and Critical Inquiry (IRCI) public lecture Paul and the undeserved gift: Why does it matter?.

The Lightfoot Professor of Divinity at Durham University is regarded as one of the foremost authorities on Pauline Christianity and the notion of the ‘undeserved gift’, recently publishing a book on the subject titled Paul and the Gift in 2015.

IRCI Director Professor James McLaren said as part of his visit to Melbourne, Professor Barclay would collaborate with researchers and academics from IRCI and the Centre for Biblical and Early Christian Studies.

“Professor Barclay brings more than 30 years of experience and knowledge to our Institute, providing our talented staff with an opportunity to collaborate with a leader in research and thought,” Professor McLaren said.

“We have been fortunate to have hosted a strong of high-calibre visiting academics throughout 2016, each bring their own unique and insightful expertise, enriching our staff and the public through our lecture series.

“In Professor Barclay we have someone who has an innate understanding of the history of early Christianity and the wider Roman and Jewish context.”
