ACU is offering educational and financial assistance for Syrian and Iraqi refugees soon to be resettled in Australia.
The University will provide full tuition scholarships via ACU’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program, designed to assist scholarship recipients to improve English language proficiency.
ACU has joined 10 Sydney and regional universities in NSW, offering scholarships, financial assistance and other support for refugees on a humanitarian visa, NSW Coordinator-General for Refugee Resettlement Peter Shergold AC announced on Wednesday.
ACU Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Craven said access to education was an important priority for refugees, as they sought to resettle in Australia over the next 18 months.
“Education is a valuable human right, and ACU is firmly committed to supporting students in their quest to further their studies which will unlock job prospects in their new home. We welcome students who have risked all to seek safety and a life of opportunity in Australia,” Professor Craven said.
The ACU package includes:
- access to the University’s Equity Pathways Admission Program
- access to financial support such as equity bursaries, and
- English language proficiency support.
The package will support preparation for university study. Students will be eligible for full tuition scholarships to cover the cost of enrolment in the University’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program where required.
The English language support is offered in Sydney, and extended to ACU’s campuses in Melbourne and Brisbane. Bursary and pathways support is available across all seven campuses.
The NSW Government has pledged to resettle at least 4,000 refugees as part of the additional Australian humanitarian intake of 12,000 refugees.
As well as the NSW initiative, ACU provides five scholarships for refugees, and is working with Catholic University of Erbil (CUE), established to provide a university for Muslim and Christian refugees in Erbil. It will also sponsor six academic staff from CUE Iraq to further their studies at ACU.
