The 2016 ANZ Championship season hangs in the balance for ACU and Melbourne Vixens trio Liz Watson, Chloe Watson and Kate Moloney as they prepare for their must-win final round clash.
The equation is simple for the current ACU students and Vixen stars – win and keep the dream of playing in the ANZ Championship finals series when they face New Zealand team Central Pulse in the final game of the regular season on Monday 4 July in Wellington.
Sitting in third position in the Australian conference for much of the season, the Vixens saw West Coast Fever leapfrog them after the Vixens suffered a tough 65-56 road loss to Southern Steel on Saturday.
It has been a challenging time for the ACU trio as they pushed for a finals berth while preparing and undertaking end of semester exams.
Keeping busy on and off the court, Liz Watson said with her exams completed the focus now turns to the game in New Zealand and the dangling carrot of helping the Vixens return to the ANZ Championship finals.
“It really is a mini-final for us, where we need to win if we want to have a chance of playing in the finals, and it’s going to be a tough ask travelling to New Zealand to play, but we’re up for the challenge,” Liz said.
The examination period had little impact on the performance of the trio and the Vixens, who won both games during the often-stressful time, with Liz finding the support and flexibility received from ACU’s Elite Athlete and Performer Program (EAPP) significant through such a crucial stage of the netball season.
“For me I find the busier I am with study and netball commitments, the better organised I become and focused on the tasks at hand,” Liz said.
“The support of the EAPP through the exam period and during the semester has been great in supporting the commitments of netball, while still being able to work toward my degree.”
Liz is currently completing a Bachelor of Education (Primary), while Chloe is studying a Bachelor of Laws and Kate is working towards a Bachelor of Science.
