17 September 2009: ACU Strathfield Campus hosted the 2009 Social Justice Statement launch of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference last Wednesday.
It was a collaborative effort between staff of ACU, the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council and the Justice and Peace Office of the Archdiocese of Sydney. The Statement was launched by Bishop Chris Saunders of Broome and Bishop Anthony Fisher OP, the latter presenting the key address, and was responded to by Ms. Bec Bromhead, Youth and Young Adults Coordinator of Vinnies NSW.
The Statement "You will Be My Witnesses: Young People and Justice", as well as the addresses of Bishop Fisher and Bec Bromhead, are attached. For a web link to the Statement go to www.socialjustice.catholic.org.au
The launch was preceded by a beautifully sung Mass, the principal celebrant being Cardinal Pell, and followed by a BBQ lunch on the grounds of the campus. Various justice and peace groups presented their wares during the day and a band played during the lunch, adding to the festive atmosphere. The many school student delegates from Catholic schools throughout the Sydney Metropolitan area that attended the day then benefitted from the experiences and perspectives of a panel of four young people working and living to put their faith into action in their daily lives and in the community.
