6 March 2008: Australian Catholic University (ACU) has appointed Professor Yoni Ryan as the new director of the Institute for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (IATL).

“We are proud to welcome Professor Ryan to her new position,” said ACU Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Craven. “Her significant publication record, leadership experience, strong values and understanding of new teaching technologies make her an ideal choice for this national and forward-thinking position.”

Professor Ryan is a long-term academic developer and is currently Director of the Centre for the Enhancement of Learning, Teaching and Scholarship at the University of Canberra.   She has extensive experience in international education, staff development, and educational design and development with new technologies, at a number of universities in Australia and the Pacific.

Professor Ryan says she was particularly attracted to the IATL because of ACU’s strong emphasis on quality learning and teaching and its commitment to social justice embedded across the curriculum. “I am delighted to take up this position, and have already met some of the ACU staff. Their enthusiasm and expertise will, I know, be invaluable as we work to improve online teaching and learning and further develop the Teaching and Learning Plan beyond 2008.

“I look forward to visiting all six campuses, and working to enhance our students’ learning,” she added.

Professor Ryan’s research interests span the challenges of teaching new generation students, and using social technologies. She is currently working on three projects funded by the Carrick Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education:  a University of Canberra initiative on social networking, a University of New South Wales project on sessional staff, and a University of New England study on developing a national Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Education, modelled at eight participating universities.

Professor Ryan has published widely in the area of professional development for academic staff. She will commence as director of ACU’s IATL on 10 March, based at the Brisbane campus (McAuley at Banyo).

Australian Catholic University (ACU) – established as Australia’s only Catholic, national, publicly funded university – is open to all. The University empowers its students and staff with a strong sense of social responsibility and concern for the moral and ethical dimensions of their study and their professional and personal lives.
