Ballarat, 28 February: The University of Ballarat (UB) and Australian Catholic University (ACU) have signed a Heads of Agreement, as part of a plan for the universities to work together more closely and collaborate in their teaching, research and community engagement activities.

"Both universities have determined that they wish to work together on a number of projects, and to this end we have agreed to formalise the association by entering into this agreement," UB Vice-Chancellor Professor David Battersby said.

ACU Vice-Chancellor Peter Sheehan AO stressed the benefits to the Ballarat region of the partnership. "In signing this agreement, the two universities are committing themselves to pursuing collaboration within the disciplines of nursing and teacher education and also in relation to joint research projects which will benefit the region and local communities," Professor Sheehan said.

"We are particularly keen to work together to assist in increasing access by regional students to higher education in regional and rural Victoria."

"To achieve our objectives, we will establish a Joint Institutional Committee to identify projects and opportunities of mutual interest, and to ensure that communication between the parties is maintained and structured," Professor Battersby said.
The agreement will operate until December 2009, but the term may be extended by the mutual agreement of both parties.

University of Ballarat is the only regional, multi-sector institution in Victoria meeting the training, education and research aspirations of students and its communities. Dare to be Different is the motto for the University of Ballarat and throughout the history of the University and its predecessor institutions strong belief in this motto has always been in evidence.

Australian Catholic University (ACU) – established as Australia's only Catholic, national, publicly funded university – is open to all. The University empowers its students and staff with a strong sense of social responsibility and concern for the moral and ethical dimensions of their study and their professional and personal lives. ACU's Ballarat Campus (Aquinas) offers programs in Education, Nursing and Theology.
