23 November, 2006: Australian Catholic University (ACU) Chancellor Brother Julian McDonald CFC AO has announced that Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Sheehan AO will step down after 10 years as the University’s chief executive.

Professor Sheehan will depart the role in January 2008 at the end of his second five-year contract.

"On behalf of the Senate of Australian Catholic University, the University community and on my own behalf, I would like to congratulate Professor Sheehan for his enormous and inspirational contribution as Vice-Chancellor," said Brother Julian. "He has steered the University through a significant period of development, challenge and achievement. He has also made invaluable contributions to the higher education sector, both in Australia and internationally, and to the Catholic Church and its associated communities."

Commenting on his decision today, Professor Sheehan said, "I feel the time has come to step back and allow the University to move forward to other challenges. A new Vice-Chancellor will lead the University towards its exciting future. I have announced my decision at this early stage to allow ample time for ACU to find an appropriate successor and to ensure a smooth transition.

"Since being appointed in 1998, I have found the role of Vice-Chancellor richly rewarding – spiritually, personally and professionally. I have profoundly enjoyed this time, witnessing ACU mature as a quality institution, both imaginative and determined in its teaching and research and at all times embracing an unique Mission.

"I have found the University’s staff, students and graduates to be genuinely inspiring, possessing a rich awareness of the needs of others and a sincere desire to serve the common good. I have learnt from them and grown through my contact with them."

Prior to becoming Vice-Chancellor of ACU, Professor Sheehan was Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Queensland. He has also held prominent positions at the University of New England, The City University of New York and Stanford University, California, and has been president of both the International Congress of Psychology and the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia. In 1995, Professor Sheehan was made an Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia for his services to education, research and psychology. As Vice-Chancellor at ACU, Professor Sheehan has also served on the Board and various committees of the Australian Vice-Chancellors' Committee.

Brother Julian advised that planning for the recruitment for a new Vice-Chancellor would commence in early 2007.

Australian Catholic University (ACU) – established as Australia’s only Catholic, national, publicly funded university – is open to all. The University empowers its students and staff with a strong sense of social responsibility and concern for the moral and ethical dimensions of their study and their professional and personal lives.
