Preparing an Application

The information you include within your application should demonstrate your skills and ability to undertake the position. It is essential that you address the selection criteria. This will enable the selection committee to review your experience, skills, qualifications and knowledge in relation to the selection criteria and to make a decision in relation to calling you for the interview.

Selection criteria identify and define the particular knowledge, attributes, qualifications and experience a person needs to successfully carry out the job. They provide a way for applicants to assess their own abilities against the University's requirements and help match the right person to the position.

It is important to note that applications that do not specifically address the selection criteria are more difficult to assess and may not be progressed to the next stage. In addition, the University maintains a strong commitment to its Mission. Applicants will be expected to demonstrate a willingness and capacity to support the Mission of the University.

When preparing responses to the selection criteria you should outline how your experience, skills, qualifications and knowledge meet the key selection criteria either through experience, training or qualifications.

The key selection criteria are outlined in the position description and are comprised of two important elements:

(a)                Essential Selection Criteria

Essential selection criteria are the qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience you must possess in order to do the job. You will need to clearly demonstrate that you meet each of the essential criteria in order for your application to progress.

(b)          Desirable Selection Criteria

You should also demonstrate the ways in which you meet any desirable criteria.  It is not necessary to meet all of the desirable criteria in order to apply for a position and for your application to progress.
