From Burma to Brisbane: discover where an ACU scholarship has taken Lay Lay Moo
Lay Lay grew up in a refugee camp in Thailand, where she had lived since the age of four when her family fled her home in Burma. She made her way to Australia on a humanitarian visa in 2009 and found her footing in Brisbane, where she is now happily studying a Bachelor of Nursing.
During her studies, Lay Lay was awarded the Catherine McAuley Scholarship, which has been a big help to her financially.
Lay Lay said, “Winning it was a great surprise to me – and a great honour. My parents encourage me to study hard and do the best I can at university, but money is very tight. With my scholarship, I was able to buy a good computer for my study and assignments.
“As I didn’t learn to speak, read or write English until I came to Australia, my scholarship also helped me pay for extra English tutoring. I was then able to meet the advanced English language requirements of my nursing course.
Thanks to my education and the generous support provided by my scholarship, I am on track to reaching my goals.”
