East Timor is Australia's closest neighbour, just 718 kilometres and one and a half hour's flight north of Darwin. It became an independent nation in 2002 after decades of war and genocide and is now rebuilding its infrastructure.
ACU has been assisting with capacity-building projects in East Timor. Programs are only made possible by, and continually require assistance from, private donors. So if you are interested in getting involved please contact us.
Based in Baucau, Timor-Leste's second largest town, Future in Youth provides an intensive coaching training program to young East Timorese leaders. Dr Paul Callery and Dr Ross Smith, lecturers based at ACU Melbourne from the School of Exercise Science, started the Future in Youth program in 2010.
The coaches bring children and teenagers to the sports fields for soccer training. Incredibly, on average over 600 young people turn up each day, rain, hail or shine!
The program also provides the opportunity for selected third-year ACU Exercise Science students to participate each year. The students help manage the program by providing leadership and direction to the coaches and engaging the local children through enthusiasm and positive role modelling.
Your support of this program will enable the program to spread into other regions of the country and to facilitate a project leader to be employed year-round to supervise the ongoing training of coaches and the growth of a soccer league.
