Sue Mitchell Nursing Scholarship
Emma Landow is the 2015 recipient of the Sue Mitchell Nursing Scholarship and a first year student studying the Bachelor of Nursing degree ACU Canberra campus.
Emma became a mother of two before she was even 18 and left school in Year 9 to take care of her young family. After witnessing her grandmother's pain while in hospital, Emma became passionate about pursuing a degree in nursing.
"This event made me reconsider my life. I realised life is too short and mine felt like it was just wasting away when I could be making a difference. I also wanted to prove my grandma right, that I really could do anything I put my mind to. I had decided I wanted to be a Nurse/Midwife. Someone who could make a difference particularly in a country town. I wanted to make sure that I could be that special someone for other people's Grandmas."
By chance Emma discovered an ACU program that gave students without ATAR scores the opportunity to study first year university units in her local town. Emma jumped at this opportunity, passed the first two units and gained direct entry to ACU.
"This course could help me to become a Nurse but also, it would help my two little ones. I could support them throughout life and teach them that anything is achievable no matter what has happened in the past."
However her nearest campus in Canberra is an hour and a half away from home, providing a significant challenge to completing degree while balancing expenses, commute time, and family life. The financial support provided by the Sue Mitchell Nursing Scholarship has been vital for Emma, assisting with travel, textbook and childcare expenses so she can attend class in Canberra and excel in her studies.
