Graduate Certificate/Graduate Diploma in Human Rights
Stimulating and challenging courses taught by some of Australia's leading human rights and social justice activists and commentators, for those who practice in the human rights field or have a passionate interest in the area.
These unique courses offered by the Institute of Legal Studies (ILS) at ACU National explore the legal framework of human rights in Australia and internationally to advance informed dialogue on current issues.
Course structure
The courses are flexibly structured to allow for different needs and learning outcomes.
Individual units may be taken on a non-award basis for professional or personal development, or you may undertake studies leading to a formal award of a Graduate Certificate of Human Rights (4 units) or a Graduate Diploma of Human rights (8 units). Note that the Graduate Diploma in Human Rights is not being offered in 2008.
Upon completion of the Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma, students will have an understanding of the legal framework that impacts on human rights issues, including treaties and international human rights mechanisms.
The courses bring together a range of disciplines to assist students to develop the necessary understandings and knowledge. Elective units build on the core units undertaken by all students to provide opportunities for individual development needs.
Units taken towards the Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma are subject to the Course rules and include 2 core units and a number of elective units.
Two core units are selected from a combination of the following:
- International Human Rights; or
- Australian Human Rights; and
- The Philosophy of Human Rights; or
- Catholic Social Thought
The elective units may include:
- Human rights and International NGOs
- Terrorism and human rights
- International human rights mechanisms
- Human rights of Indigenous Peoples
- Citizenship and human rights
- Foundations of social justice
- Issues in Christian ethics
Further information
Further information about all of the units is available by contacting ILS. Offerings will be subject to student enrolment numbers and staff availability.
