Research Classification Codes

The Australian and New Zealand Standard Research Classification (ANZSRC) (PDF, 1.6MB) is the collective name for a set of three related classifications developed for use in the measurement and analysis of research and experimental development (R&D) undertaken in Australia and New Zealand.  The ANZSRC is jointly produced by the Australian Bureau of Statistics and Statistics New Zealand.

All research activity (grants, projects, publications) undertaken at Australian Catholic University (ACU National) must be coded under the ANZSRC to the 6 digit level.

The three constituent classifications included in the ANZSRC are:

Types of Activity (ToA)

The ToA classification enables research and development to be classified in terms of its research effort. An explanation of the ToA codes is provided by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Fields of Research (FoR)

The FoR classification enables research and development to be classified in terms of its discipline and describes the nature of the research being done.  FoR codes are provided by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Socio-Economic Objective (SEO)

The SEO classification allows research and development to be classified in terms of the main area of expected national benefit. SEO codes are provided by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
