Professor Peter Wilson
Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Research and International
Professor Peter Wilson took up the position of Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and International) at Australian Catholic University in May, 2006. Prior to moving to ACU, he was Professor and Head of Psychology from May 2000 at Southern Cross University where he established a new School of Psychology. He also occupied the position of Associate Dean (Coffs Harbour Campus) in 2002.
Between 1992 and 2000 Professor Wilson was at Flinders University in Adelaide where he occupied positions of Professor of Psychology (1997 – 2000) and Associate Professor in Clinical Psychology (1992-1996). He has also occupied academic positions at the University of Sydney (1981-1990), the University of Western Australia (1980), and the University of New South Wales (1979). He undertook his studies at the University of New South Wales where he was awarded a PhD in Psychology in 1980, and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in 1975. He has occupied visiting positions at the University of Oregon (1984), Pennsylvania State University (1984), University of London and St Thomas’ Hospital Pain Unit (1990), Klinik Roseneck, Prien am Chiemsee, Bavaria, Germany (1994), University of West Virginia (1994) University of New South Wales (1998) and the St Petersburg State University of Architecture and Engineering (2003).
Professor Wilson’s research has been in the area of clinical and health psychology. In particular, he is well known internationally for his research on psychological aspects and management He is of tinnitus (ringing the ears). He has also published work in the area of cognitive-behaviour therapy for depression and other mental health problems. He is a member of the Australian Psychological Society and the Baltic Academy of Education. He received a Distinguished Career Award, 1998 from the Australian Association for Cognitive and Behaviour Therapy. He is the author or co-author of three monographs two edited books and over 50 journal articles. He has held NH&MRC grants for research on psychological aspects of tinnitus and diabetes, and has published extensively on topics in the area of clinical and health psychology. He has also maintained a strong interest in the quality of teaching and has been a member of a multi-university team which was awarded a Carrick Institute grant to complete a study of Learning outcomes and curriculum development in psychology. He has supervised over 100 theses.
Professor Wilson is a member of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) and the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International) committees of the Australian Vic-Chancellors’ Committee. He also chairs the NSW PVC/DVC (International) committee. He is a former Chair of the Heads of Departments and Schools of Psychology Association (2002- 2003), the National President of Australian Behaviour Modification Association (1986-87) and vice-president of the Board of Directors of Coffs Harbour Regional Conservatorium of Music (2000-2005). For the Australian Psychological Society, Professor Wilson has served as a member of the Professional Development Accreditation Advisory Group from 1996 - 2006.
