Caring for the world

Social science and counselling student Coni Forcey, 46, who cares about climate change, organised 2,500 people to spell out a message to the world on Sandringham Beach.

Coni, who co-founded the Bayside Climate Change Action Group, received the Australian Catholic University Outstanding Student Community Engagement Award in 2007.

"I'm just a mother who is concerned about the future my kids face with the impact of climate change,” said Coni, a student at the Melbourne Campus (St Patrick’s)."

"Raising my children has been my most important job, and working to secure a safe climate environment for all is a close second.  I think that people will look back on this time in history as being a time of humans raping the planet for its riches. And the next chapter, hopefully, will be seeing the error of their ways, and a global shift to protect it.”

The "halt climate change now" message involved local residents, 13 local schools, and members of the Tuvaluan Community.

"The event highlighted to me the injustice of their plight," said Coni. "They are losing their homes because the rising sea levels from climate change are due to the wasteful lifestyles of the western world, my world."

"My main concern is that people and the leaders of the world won't act quickly enough.  We have a very small window of opportunity to act before catastrophic climate change effects begin to happen."

"The evidence is already clear from around the world - every continent is witnessing bizarre climatic changes, whether they be increased flooding, unseasonable snow, droughts, or loss of species.  Behavioural changes that we make now won’t have an effect for nearly 50 years, and it is irresponsible to pass this on to our children to solve."
