Art on Legs

Students were tested on their original designs, based on themes. Jessica Morrison, Caterina Mollace and Aleshea Bird won second place in the Gondwana category for their Australian themed design, Abstracted acacia, which featured wattle.

Natalie Hutchinson, Natalie McColl and Nicole Wheeler took second place in the same category for their earth, fire, wind and water piece, Her terror and her beauty, which contrasted the destruction and regeneration aspects of fire.

Caterina Mollace, whose passion for textiles at school led her to major in textiles within her arts and teaching course, said the win was a surprise.

“We definitely did not expect to win,” said Caterina. “It was great that we did, though. And it was probably my favourite project so far.”

Nicole Wheeler, who is specialising in food technology, was equally as surprised at her group’s win.
“I’m really proud of the project, especially as there were professional designers in this competition,” said Nicole.

“The girl who came first was a professional designer, and here we were, textiles students, coming in second and third place.”

The students’ designs have been on display in Hobart, and will be made available for hire to high school textiles teachers to inspire other students.

Designers from all over Australia and New Zealand competed at the event.
