Undergraduate Courses - Social Work
The School of Social Work offers a two-year full-time professional course in Social Work leading to the degree of the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW). It also offers a combined Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Social Work (with the ANU) in Canberra and a Bachelor of Theology/Bachelor of Social Work. The Australian Association of Social Workers has accredited these programs.
For full time BSW students the course extends from February to December with the second semester primarily allocated to the Field Placement. The course prepares students to practice in a wide range of social work roles in both direct and indirect practice including:
- social work theory and practice,
- counselling and casework,
- policy and planning,
- research and evaluation,
- community development, and
- administration.
Study areas include social work and social welfare history, social work practice methodologies, social-personal systems, community work, research methods design and evaluation, soical policies and programs, skills workshops and field studies.

Honours Program
The purpose of the Honours degree is to provide students with the opportunity to develop research skills in social work and a deeper understanding of social work theory and practice. The aim of the Honours program is to equip students with skills in research design and methods appropriate to social work to enable them to undertake research into social work.
The Bachelor of Social Work Honours program comprises 40 credit points of academic studies (in addition to satisfying the requirements of the pass degree):

Honours Research Seminar (10 credit points)

Social Work Honours Thesis normally not exceeding 15, 000 words (30 credit points).
Entry into the honours program requires:

Successful completion of all requiremdents of the first year of the Bachelor of Social Work course including the Social Work placement;

a grade of Distinction or above in two of the six graded units in the first year of the Bachelor of Social Work course and grades of credit or above in the other four graded units;

have satisfied the prerequisites for the particular units to be undertaken in the Honours course.
