This ‘hands-on’ workshop for business academics is based on the outcomes of an ALTC funded project entitled “Embedding the Development and Assessment of Generic Skills in the Business Curriculum”. As the title suggests, the project addressed the issue of how to develop, embed and assess selected generic skills in business curricula in ways that are educationally meaningful and professionally relevant for students, academics and future employers.

The four generic skills are

  • critical thinking
  • ethical practice
  • effective teamwork
  • understanding sustainability.

The project team developed a set of resources, teaching techniques and assessment standards which have been trialled with students and reviewed by industry representatives and academics. In this workshop you will be able to review and discuss these resources and to investigate ways in which they can be used in your teaching. There will be an opportunity to investigate how to embed criteria from these four skills into assessment tasks.

The project website www.graduateskills.edu.au contains a more detailed outline, learning and teaching resources, standards of achievement and updates on project progress.
