Australian Bureau of Statistics

The Australian Bureau of Statistics conducts a biannual survey of research and experimental development (R&D) within business, higher education, government and private non-profit organisations. The all-sector aggregates from these surveys are the only comprehensive data on Australia's R&D effort. They enable the nature and distribution of Australia's R&D activity to be monitored by government policy analysts and advisers to business, government and economists.

For the purposes of this survey, research and development activity includes:

  • activity of research and development staff
  • provision of support to staff directly engaged in R&D
  • management of staff engaged in or supporting R&D
  • activities of higher degree research students
  • supervision of higher degree research students

Data is combined from a number of sources within the University, including the research data collection (HERDC and University Only categories), student administration, finance and human resources.

The 2011 ABS Higher Education Survey of Research and Experimental Development will report on all research and experimental development activity in 2010. The submission is due by 31 July 2011. The Research Performance team will prepare the submission using data from a number of sources within the University, as outlined above.

The University Only collection, to collect data necessary to complete the ABS Higher Education Survey of Research and Experimental Development, is now open.  Refer to the University Only Research Collection page. Aggregated data from this collection is published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
