Excellence in Research Australia (ERA)

On 26 February 2008, the Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, the Hon. Senator Kim Carr, announced plans for a new research quality and evaluation system.

The Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) initiative has been developed by the Australian Research Council (ARC). ERA assesses research quality within Australia's higher education institutions using a combination of indicators and peer review.

ERA identifies by institution and by discipline;

  • areas that are internationally competitive; and
  • emerging areas where there are opportunities for development and further investment.

In 2009, a trial of ERA has evaluated the Physical, Chemical and Earth Sciences (PCE) and Humanities and Creative Arts (HCA) clusters. From 2010 ERA will evaluate research in eight discipline clusters.
