Mr Phil Glendenning
Director
Edmund Rice Centre, Sydney
Phil is the director of the Edmund Rice Centre. He is also the National President of Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation (ANTaR) and the author of the Australian Citizens' Statement that is the basis for ANTaR's Sea of Hands. With a background in education, Third World development and political science, today he is primarily involved in peace and reconciliation work - especially with youth - in Australia, Northern Ireland, Israel and Palestine, Rwanda and Aboriginal Australia. Previously he was the national adult education and information officer of Caritas Australia.
The Edmund Rice Centre undertakes a range of projects including research, advocacy, networking, engaging with schools and the community sector, running cross-cultural immersion programs and conducting in-services and training.
The Centre has a particular focus on issues affecting Indigenous and young people, but are involved in a range of social justice issues both nationally and internationally including a range of community education activities such as immersion programs to Indigenous communities in Australia and with partner organisations oversees. Immersion focuses on issues of cross-cultural communication, peace and conflict.
Community education is also a key goal of their Schools Network, and aims to involve schools from around Australia in a discussion of social justice issues and an exchange of information on projects schools are undertaking to advance these issues.
