ETHN101 Cultural Traditions of Asia

10 cp
Prerequisites Nil
Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent of lectures, tutorials and document workshops.

This unit aims to introduce students to the majesty and breadth of diverse civilizations in Asia prior to western colonial incursions into the region. An examination of religions and tradition of thought, art, literature, social organization and script will expose the student to a wide range of cultures in Asia during the pre-colonial period. It is framed within the context of developing an understanding of how contemporary notions of “Asian culture” have formed, and aims to challenge assumptions that the great “civilizations” of Asia are purely historical.
