ENGL226 The Book of Books: the Bible and its uses in Western Literature

10 cp
Prerequisites 1 Literature unit at introductory 100-level
Teaching Organisation A range of teaching procedures including lectures, tutorials and screenings will be used.

The unit will first examine the formation and reception of the bible in Jewish and Christian tradition, with special emphasis on the relationship between Jewish and Christian scriptures, canon formation, translation, and the issues of interpretation and authority that have conditioned reading practices from antiquity to the present. The rest of the course will involve the reading and discussion of poetic and dramatic texts that respond to the biblical tradition from the middle ages to the late eighteenth century. It will investigate how these texts engage with scripture in different ways: retelling, imitating, echoing, and subverting.
