EDST614 Contexts for Teaching Science and Technology

10 cp

This unit explores the variety of curriculum contexts that may be used to engage students and bring relevance to learning science and technology. Modern science and technology curricula usually aim to develop the scientific and technological literacy of students. Contexts provide a rationale for learning science and technology in the 21st century and provide a pathway to introduce students to the basis of the discipline’s literacy, conceptual knowledge base and the methods by which that knowledge is developed. Starting points for teaching may be drawn from such contexts as science or technology in society, nature and history of science, cultural and/or technological perspectives, community and/or sustainability issues. These approaches apply in both primary and high school situations.
