EDST613 Learning Science and Technology
10 cp
This unit aims to develop students’ understanding of how learners develop ideas in science and technology and how teaching can respond to this. There is a wealth of empirical research on children’s ideas in science and emerging theories of how these ideas develop derived from constructivist views of learning. A number of strategies have been shown to be effective at eliciting, probing, challenging and assessing students’ ideas. From this research base, teaching strategies will be explored such as learners’ questions, conceptual change, specific teacher explanation, cognitive acceleration, cognitive load theory, problem solving approaches and backward design to help facilitate children’s science and technology learning in early childhood, primary and secondary school situations.
