Australian Catholic University’s (ACU) Strathfield Campus will this month host ARTEXPRESS – an outstanding collection of work by 2011 HSC visual arts students.
The ACU exhibition will be unique in that the artworks chosen all focus on issues of social justice in today’s society.
Curator Lachlan Warner said the choice was deliberate, as social justice serves as the driving force of ACU’s Mission and commitment in education.
“There is an astonishing degree of sophistication in the works,” he said. “That they can take on sometimes difficult themes with such maturity gives me great confidence in the future of Australian art.”
Co-curator Dr Karen Maras, Senior Lecturer in Visual Arts Education, said the exhibition features a broad range of approaches including ceramics, collection of works, drawing, graphic design, painting, printmaking, sculpture and textiles.
“The quality of students’ work we see in this exhibition reflects the strengths of the visual arts curriculum and the quality of teaching in our schools,” she said. “The curriculum asks students to develop theoretical perspectives informing their understandings of how to be artists and to develop a body of work.”
“NSW education supports a unique curriculum in this subject that provides a space in which students of all abilities can work with their teachers in learning to be artists and to develop an appreciation of the value of visual arts in later life.”
ARTEXPRESS will be on display until May 26 at the McGlade Gallery, ACU Strathfield, Gate 3, 25A Barker Road, Strathfield.
Opening hours are Monday to Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm.
