ACU appoints new Associate Vice-Chancellor (Melbourne)

Dr John Ballard has been appointed Associate Vice‐Chancellor (Melbourne) of Australian Catholic University (ACU).
Dr Ballard has more than 20 years experience in the health and aged care industries. Most recently he has served as a Director of Lapis Proprietary Limited, a specialist consulting firm focusing on the health and aged care industries.Prior to this, Dr Ballard served as Chief Executive Officer of Mercy Health for 11 years, where his work involved securing Mercy Health’s operating position and long‐term capital asset base, and an intent focus on its people. Amongst others, Dr Ballard’s achievements at Mercy Health include the successful relocation of a major tertiary service; establishment of a Foundation to support teaching, research and training; establishment of a registered training organisation and; establishment of a clinical school on a hospital site.
Dr Ballard has worked in senior executive roles with the Sisters of Charity Health System, in various positions with ACT hospitals, and in policy roles within the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet in Canberra.
Dr Ballard holds a Bachelor of Arts (ANU), Master of Health Administration (UNSW), and a Doctor of Business Administration (Macquarie). He is the recipient of a number of awards including the 2009 CEO of the Year from the Australian Human Resources Institute.ACU Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Craven welcomed Dr Ballard, and said he looked forward to his leadership and contributions to ACU Melbourne and the overall University community.
“As a member of both ACU’s Victorian Chapter, and the Advisory Board of ACU’s Business School in Sydney, Dr Ballard has a working knowledge of the University which will undoubtedly be a great asset in this significant role,” he said.
Dr Ballard will replace Mr Chris Sheargold, who retires after 35 years of outstanding service to ACU and its predecessor colleges.
