Our proud history
ACU has come a long way from its inception in 1990, following the amalgamation of four Catholic colleges:
- The Catholic College of Education Sydney in New South Wales
- The Institute of Catholic Education in Victoria
- McAuley College of Queensland
- Signadou College of Education in the Australian Capital Territory.
These colleges trace their own history back even further to the Mid-19th Century, when religious orders and institutes became involved in preparing teachers for Catholic schools and, later, nurses for Catholic hospitals.
This is something the University continues to do today.
Through a series of amalgamations, relocations, transfers of responsibilities and diocesan initiatives, more than 20 historical entities have contributed to the creation of ACU.
Over the past 25 years, the University has gone from strength to strength, and now boasts:
- More than 30,000 students from 90 countries
- More than 2,000 highly qualified and dedicated staff
- Seven campuses nationally.
ACU is now Australia’s leading Catholic university and an important institution internationally.
The University today offers a wide choice of courses in Health Sciences, Law and Business, Theology and Philosophy, and Education and Arts.
ACU continues to be a proudly Catholic educational institution that, together with other Catholic organisations, prepares people for future employment in our schools, hospitals and not-for-profit services.
ACU is very proud of our 25 year history of achievement.
Join us in 2015 to celebrate.
