ACU will establish one of 12 new Teaching Academies to provide workplace preparation for teachers in Victoria.
ACU welcomes the opportunity to work in partnership with the Catholic Education Office Melbourne to establish a new Teaching Academy under the Victorian Government’s education initiative announced today.
ACU will establish one of 12 Teaching Academies of Professional Practice working with schools in the north-west region of Melbourne and Victoria to provide rigorous, high-quality preparation for the workplace.
Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Pauline Nugent said ACU was pleased to be involved in the scheme to improve educational outcomes for pre-service teachers who would gain mentoring and classroom experience during professional placement in partner schools.
“ACU equips education students with the skills, knowledge and experience needed to become world-class teachers,” Professor Nugent said. “This initiative provides a coordinated approach involving principals, trained mentor teachers and pre-service teachers who can analyse teaching practice for learning effectiveness.”
The Academy will:
• Increase the capability of schools to provide effective workplace experience to pre-service teachers • Lead teacher development through quality mentoring • Influence university course design and delivery of pre-service education • Provide vital research evidence on strategies to improve learning outcomes.
ACU is one of the largest providers of teacher education in Victoria and graduates teach in Catholic, government and independent schools from early years through to senior schooling.
“Our students are also given the opportunity to gain the additional qualifications required to teach in Catholic schools, maximising their chances for employment across all sectors,” Professor Nugent said.
“The University’s commitment to the Catholic intellectual tradition, the pursuit of knowledge, the dignity of the human person and the common good, means that our graduates make for well-rounded teachers.”
ACU is Australia’s only truly national university with a campus in Melbourne and six other campuses in locations around the country.
