To support writers and to continue the tradition of the Catholic Church.
Australian Catholic University (ACU) has announced the inaugural ACU Prize for Literature, valued at $7000. The ACU Prize for Literature aims to support writers and to continue the tradition of the Catholic Church as a key patron of the arts. Each year will have a nominated theme and form of writing. The 2013 prize will be awarded to the poet who best conveys everyday immanence.
As explained by Richard Kearney, the poetic imagination seeks to draw out the “sacramental in the sensible”, to retrieve “the divine at the very heart of the least of things”. Poet, author and academic Professor Kevin Hart will judge the competition.
Renowned for his books on philosophy, theology, literary criticism and several acclaimed collections of poetry, Professor Hart is the Edwin B. Kyle Chair of Christian Studies in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Virginia, holds the Eric D’Arcy Chair of Philosophy, and is Director of the Centre for Philosophy and Phenomenology of Religion at ACU.
As poet of international reputation, his latest collection is entitled Morning Knowledge.
Fr Anthony Casamento, Director of ACU’s Identity and Mission directorate that is sponsoring the prize, said the University was excited about this initiative.
"The Church has always been a key patron of the arts through the ages, and this prize further reinforces ACU’s commitment to this tradition by engaging fully in the breadth of the Catholic Intellectual Tradition. Having Kevin Hart as our judge, further adds to this commitment."
