29 November 2010: Former Defence Force chief, General Peter Cosgrove AC, MC, was installed as the new Chancellor of Australian Catholic University (ACU) yesterday, during a ceremony at St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney.
His Eminence, Cardinal George Pell presided over the Mass, which was also attended by NSW Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell, and Parliamentary Secretary for School Education and Workplace Relations Jacinta Collins.
General Cosgrove will be the third Chancellor in the University’s history, succeeding Brother Julian McDonald CFC AO, who retired from the position after 10 years of outstanding service.
During the ceremony, General Cosgrove thanked Brother Julian for his many years of service and for being “invariably wise and generous, and committed in every way to the great men and women of the community.”

“With great humility I contemplate the task set to me, by my actions and example to help lead a great institution in its vital role - to provide a morals-based education of the highest calibre to men and women who will serve their communities within a set of values cherished by our great Church,” he said. “This responsibly is very significant and I pledge myself to it today.”
“My soldier’s life has shown me so very many examples of cheerful determined people working within a close community to achieve difficult goals.
“Ours at ACU now is to help educate and empower people so that they may serve their brothers and sisters. At ACU we pray and strive for that outcome. With God’s help and yours, ACU will continue to grow and prosper.”
