3 July 2009:Australian Catholic University (ACU) art student, Matt Tsourdalakis, has won the Frankston Arts Centre Artist Developmental Award for his video entry.
The short film was created using animation techniques, human subjects and live surroundings. Shot frame by frame, almost 6000 images were used to create a disjointed time effect. The film is entitled I Hate This and... Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime and... I Wake Up Every day.
Matt, who is studying a Bachelor of Visual Art and Design at the University’s Melbourne Campus, will have his work displayed in a solo exhibition at the Cube 37 Glass Gallery at the Frankston Arts Centre.
Elaine Miles, curator of the Centre, said the stop motion animation itself was a very time consuming outcome that showed dedication and promise.
“Matt showed great promise and we want to support artists who are creatively and uniquely pursuing their careers with dedication,” she said.
The Development Award is presented annually as part of the Frankston Arts Centre Open Exhibition. This years’ theme was Sound/Silence – with 65 artists showing in the exhibition.
Matt said personal experience was a key motivator for the film: “It was inspired by a time in my life when I was frustrated with the uncertainty of my career,” he said.
“Art can mean one thing to one person, and might mean something completely different to another. Who’s to say if it’s good or bad?”
Currently undertaking an internship with an Australian film producer, Matt said he would like to follow a career in the advertising industry.
“The Bachelor of Visual Art and Design is about developing ideas and you can work in any medium to develop the specific skills that interest you,” he said. “I prefer to work in film rather than with images, as film allows more of a narrative, a story.”
Matt’s work and that of his classmates will be on display at the BVAD Graduate Show from 7-13 November at the ACU Gallery, 26 Brunswick Street Fitzroy.
