27 March 2009: Australian Catholic University (ACU) will again encourage the nation's best ethics research as part of the 2009 Australian Museum Eureka Prizes.
The ACU-sponsored Eureka Prize for Research in Ethics, now in its eighth year, is valued at $10,000.
The award recognises outstanding research into theoretical or practical ethical issues that contribute to the understanding and development of ethical standards, and can be awarded to an individual researcher or a research team.
ACU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Greg Craven, said the award captures the spirit of the University’s own social justice and ethics mission, through relevant scholarly research.
“Australian Catholic University is guided by a fundamental concern for ethics, whether they be personal, academic or research-based,” he said. “Our mission is to be a community characterised by free inquiry and academic integrity – with the pursuit of ethics being an important component of this.”
Entries are welcomed from all Australian researchers whose work fits the judging criteria, including internal applicants from ACU.
“Last year’s winner, Professor Grant Cullity from the University of Adelaide, was selected from a highly competitive field for his book, The Moral Demands of Affluence, which examines whether and to what extent well-to-do individuals are obliged to help others less well off,” Professor Craven said.
“We anticipate this year’s entries will be of a similarly high caliber – scholarly, innovative, insightful and faithful to the spirit of the prize.”
Entrants to the 2009 Australian Museum Eureka Prizes – Australia’s premier awards for science and science promotion – stand to share in more than $180,000 total prize money across 18 awards, including honours for research and innovation, leadership, school science, and science journalism and communication.
Applications for the ACU Eureka Prize for Research in Ethics close at midnight AEST on Friday, 1 May 2009. For information on how to enter, visit the 2009 Australian Museum Eureka Prizes website at http://amonline.net.au/eureka/
