20 August 2008: Australian Catholic University (ACU) is helping the Australian Sport Commission find Australia's next gold medal hopes, with an eye on the London 2012 Olympics. With the search to find Australia’s next gold medal hopes for the London 2012 Olympics and beyond, Australia is embarking on a world first initiative to uncover talented hopefuls from every corner of the nation.
The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) has launched an online electronic talent identification tool (eTID) which is a free and easy‐to‐use program that allows aspiring or current athletes, and even former elite athletes, to assess their potential in a particular sport.
The ASC has teamed up with the Australian Catholic University and more than 20 other universities throughout Australia to act as a Talent Assessment Centre.
Through eTID, the individual’s information is processed online and if identified as ‘above average’ the athlete is then encouraged to visit a Talent Assessment Centre to have their results verified.
Such a collaboration to seek out talent has never occurred before and through this method the capability to hunt for talented athletes has been greatly expanded.
Sports biochemist Dr. Liz Bradshaw, also the Director of Sport Science for the Australian Association for Exercise and Sports Science (AAESS) and ACU Exercise Science course coordinator, said this was an exciting initiative.
“Often, these programs have found that young people who are good at sports such as athletics or netball are actually better suited to other sports like cycling or rowing,” Dr Bradshaw said.
“Opening the talent ID process to the general public through online registration will give us the best chance for discovering the rich vein of untapped athletic talent in the community.”
Greg Nance, ASC Director for Sport Performance and Development, understands that for Australia to compete successfully on the world stage with big countries like China, we need to think differently.
“eTID is Australia’s solution to finding talent in a way that is smarter and more efficient,” Mr Nance said.
We encourage all aspiring athletes to log onto eTID (ausport.gov.au/etid) today and find out if they have the potential to be Australia’s next sporting champion.
