Compeer is a program of St Vincent de Paul Society. A volunteer is matched individually with a person living with the effects of a mental illness. They meet once a week for an hour of friendly activity of mutual interest. People matched in the program are supported through comprehensive training and supervision of the match by professional Compeer staff experienced in mental health service delivery.
The volunteer is matched with a person with mental illness to provide regular, personal, friendly companionship. The Compeer volunteer’s role complements professional care. The role is highly individual, depending on the stage of the relationship and the mutually agreed expectations of the time spent together.
The selection criteria for this role is broad. Among a range of requirements, it requires strong communication and interpersonal skills and the capacity to maintain effective boundaries set by the program.
