Building Dreams in Malaysia
Delegates at the University Scholars Leadership Symposium
Two Australian Catholic University (ACU) students have recently returned from the Humanitarian Affairs University Scholars Leadership Symposium, Building Dreams, in Malaysia.
Tammy Lees, a nursing student from the Melbourne Campus, and Kristyna Wowk, a teaching/ arts student and Strathfield Campus Student Association President, were two of 400 student leaders who attended the event.
They were selected for their natural leadership abilities and communication skills , and sponsored by the University through the office of Professor Anne Cummins, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Students, Learning and Teaching).
“Participation in events such as the Building Dreams symposium form an essential part of ACU’s commitment to internationalisation,” Professor Cummins said. “They provide the opportunity for ACU students to contribute in international forums.”
The five-day event held in Malacca, Malaysia, consisted of presentations by speakers from government, not-for-profit and legal organisations from around the world.
Mother of three Tammy said she was particularly moved by the presentation from Geraldine Cox, the Country Director and President of Sunrise Home in Cambodia. “She told the stories of children in her care and it seems unfathomable that children can experience such things,” she said.
“It seems that the world should stop when an orphan infant has his corneas stolen for the black market or an eight-year old sells her body so her family can eat, yet we continue going on with our daily lives for the most part unaware. I left the event informed on current issues regarding the developing world but also as a stronger person. I cannot thank ACU enough for giving me the gift of such a wonderful adventure.”
