Lecturer participates in climate change education conference

Marie Fisher, Lecturer in Information and Communication Technology at ACU's Canberra Campus, attended the first international conference on climate education last month in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The Inspiring Climate Education conference (ICE09) was funded by the Danish Ministry of Education. It was designed to draw attention to the issues of teaching and integrating climate change into secondary education and to help develop best practice among current and future teachers.

Marie's attendance at the conference was sponsored by the Independent Education Union of ACT/NSW.

"If we are to cope with the current global climate challenge, children and young people must get a fundamental understanding of the causes and solutions to climate change through collective and individual actions," she said. "Lessons about climate change will need to be inspiring and engaging."

"The resources I brought back will provide current and pre-service teachers with ideas for teaching climate change as well as opportunities for academic research," she added.

More information on the ICE09 conference and climate change teaching materials can be found at:  www.teacherscop15.dk.
